The NordCham ICT Committee met at the Grundfos IS office on April 20. Atty. Trisha Cruz of Carpo Law gave a presentation on the current labor best practices in the Philippines, focusing on termination and holidays. She highlighted the importance of documentation especially when it comes to terminating an employee. She suggested that the Employee Manual and Contract should explicitly reflect what the Company expects from its employees.
In terms of “in lieu of” workdays, Atty. Trish confirmed that these are allowed provided that the employees are well informed and has given their consent. Notification and consent is preferably in writing.
In the same meeting, the ICT Committee also covered ongoing concerns over the lack of quality of fresh IT graduates was discussed. Committee members recognize deficiencies in the curriculum and lack of maturity and passion as factors that lead to this phenomena. In response, the ICT Committee is eyeing to establish a partnership with the Academe to come up with solutions to improve the quality of IT fresh graduates. The partnership may take the form of a fora between stakeholders or the ICT Committee providing a baseline test/ requirement wherein the academe can incorporate into their curricula.
