EVENT HIGHLIGHTS: Extended Producer Responsibility Forum 2025

Earlier today, 20 May 2025, the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Forum was successfully held at the Isabela Ballroom, Makati Shangri-La. The forum focused on the important policy approach of Extended Producer Responsibility, which assigns the responsibility of managing post-consumer waste to producers.

The forum provided an in-depth overview of the legislation, its implementation, and its impact on the business community. Discussions also highlighted future implications for companies not yet covered by EPR legislation and showcased best practices from the European business community in advancing sustainability.

Esteemed speakers contributed throughout the event, each addressing key topics related to Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Roy Akker, President of the Dutch Chamber, and Dr. Johannes Paul, Project Manager for GIZ Philippines, provided an introduction to EPR and its role in responsible plastic waste management, as well as an overview of the legislation and its implementation. Sarah McLeod, Vice Chair of the British Chamber, and Engr. Esperanza A. Sajul from DENR discussed the impact of EPR on businesses covered by the legislation and shared the government’s perspective on enforcement and environmental impact.

Javier Palomino from La Camara and Rudi Ramin of PCX Markets highlighted the challenges and opportunities for businesses under EPR, including market-based approaches that support its goals. Roman Menz, Vice President of the European Chamber, and Chris Ferareza of P&A Grant Thornton focused on future implications, policy recommendations, and sustainability reporting and compliance.

The panel discussion, moderated by Engr. Meg Santos, Environment & Water Committee Chair of the European Chamber, featured insights from diverse sectors. Professor Jovito Katigbak of DLSU spoke on the effectiveness of EPR in reducing waste, while Lea Guerrero of Greenpeace Philippines emphasized community-driven plastic waste solutions. Private sector leaders David Katz of Plastic Bank and Cara Peralta of Prime Integrated Waste Solutions shared best practices and innovations in EPR implementation.

Finally, Christine Fajardo, Chairperson of the Swiss Chamber, together with Tom van der Meulen of Control Union Philippines, offered valuable perspectives on standardization and compliance for effective EPR implementation.
